“Society speaks through its people, its traditions, and its constant evolution—and sociology teaches us how to listen.”
The Department of Sociology & Social Work has evolved as a dynamic academic unit committed to understanding and addressing the complexities of society through both theoretical insight and practical engagement. Initially established in 2014 as the Department of Social Work and later renamed as Department of Sociology & Social work. It began with the Master of Social Work (MSW) programme aimed at training professional social workers equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values required for effective social intervention. Expanding its academic horizon, the Department introduced the M.A. Sociology programme from the academic session 2025–2026 to foster critical sociological inquiry and deeper engagement with contemporary social realities. The first batch of the M.A. Sociology started with enrollment of 27 students.
I am delighted to introduce the Department of Sociology & Social Work, CBLU (formerly known as the Department of Social Work). Since its establishment in 2014, the department has made significant strides in promoting academic excellence and meaningful community engagement, particularly in addressing social issues in the nearby villages of Bhiwani town. The department initially began with the Master of Social Work (MSW) programme, with an intake capacity of 30 students. The programme is distinguished by its strong Field Work Practicum component, which provides students with experiential learning opportunities and equips them with essential knowledge, skills, and professional values required for effective social work practice. In response to evolving academic and societal needs, the department has expanded its academic offerings with the introduction of the M.A. Sociology programme from the academic session 2025–26. This programme aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of society, culture, and social dynamics, fostering critical thinking and research aptitude among students.
Both programmes emphasize holistic development through academic learning, field exposure, training programmes, webinars, seminars, and conferences. These platforms enable students to build strong professional networks with alumni, practitioners, and organizations, thereby enhancing their career prospects. In today’s rapidly changing social landscape, the relevance and scope of sociology and social work have expanded considerably. Our graduates are well-prepared to take on diverse professional roles such as Community Mobiliser, Project Coordinator, Counsellor, Medical Social Worker, Researcher, Labour Welfare Officer, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Social Welfare Officer, Policy Makers , Development Practitioners etc, contributing meaningfully to social development and transformation. The Department remains committed to nurturing socially responsible professionals and scholars who can critically engage with contemporary social issues and work towards building an inclusive and equitable society.

The MSW programme, introduced in 2014 with an intake of 30 students, focuses on developing professionally trained social workers capable of addressing psychosocial challenges at individual, group, and community levels. The programme offers specializations in Family and Child Development and Human Resource Management, enhancing employability across diverse sectors. Aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, the MSW curriculum emphasizes both academic rigor and field-based learning. Field Work Practicum forms the core of the programme, where students engage in concurrent fieldwork, summer internships, orientation visits, educational tours, and training workshops. These experiences enable students to apply classroom knowledge in real-life settings.
The Department has lifetime membership with the National Association of Professional Social Workers in India (NAPSWI), strengthening professional exposure and networking opportunities.
The Department is enriched with faculty members who possess substantial field experience in national and international organizations. The Department has consistently maintained a strong placement record ( through job referrals), with students working in reputed organizations such as the Red Cross, industrial sectors, non-governmental organizations, and various government departments.

The M.A. Sociology programme is designed to cultivate a scientific understanding of society by encouraging observation, critical thinking, and analytical interpretation of social processes. The programme provides a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and practical exposure, enabling students to develop social awareness, empathy, and research competencies.
The Department regularly conducts academic and interactive activities such as:
- Seminars and Extension lectures
- Workshops and student presentations
- Fieldwork and social surveys
- Group discussions and debates
- Community-based awareness programmes
These activities provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom. By integrating theory with field experiences, the Department prepares students for various career paths, including higher education, research, social services, and administrative roles. Sociology continues to be a favourite optional subject among many UPSC toppers every year, and in 2026 as well, it has shown a highest success rate among the top 30 rank holders. With its interdisciplinary nature and strong conceptual foundation, Sociology stands out as a dynamic subject that bridges academic knowledge with practical governance and societal transformation and contributes positively to the development of society.
